Biography 9

SCOTT SUSSMAN was born in Fountain Valley, California in 1971. He conceived Octopus Ink Press when a shark attacked him while he was scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef. He was saved when a giant octopus enveloped him in a cloud of black ink and, by the time visibility had returned, the shark and the octopus were gone. Scott used the ink that had saved his life to pen his first book.

When asked why he writes for children, he said, “Because anything is possible in the mind of a child. Tables can talk, French fries can refuse to be eaten, and your socks can complain that your feet stink. For me that’s fun.”

In addition to reading, writing, and playing the harmonica, Scott spends his time taming lions, chasing tornadoes, and training his pet cat in the art of pillow fighting. He lives in Rome with his wife, Francesca, where he works teaching English to students of all ages.

Hi, Scott. I am the father of two girls who attend St. Jeanne de Lestonnac school in Tustin. When I picked them up from school yesterday, they were excited to tell me that they had met, Scott Sussman, the author of some books they’ve read and liked. I told them that this name rung a bell with me and that I rembered going to school with someone of that name. They told me that he was from Fountain Valley. I then realized that you must be the one. Although I don’t recall the details, I certainly recall your name. I graduated from FVHS in 1990. Before that, I attended Fulton and Courreges. In any case, it certainly is a small world! I commend you on what you do because it has certainly had an impact on my kids. Take care, Alex Lazo.

    Hi Alex,

Pardon me for responding only now, but I only now saw this message. Apparently, WordPress doesn’t notify me via email when I receive messages. I definitely recognize your name. I graduated from FVHS in 1989, and before that attended Fountain Valley Elementary School right across the street. I’m happy to hear your daughters enjoyed my books. It’s a thrill to do the school visits and connect with children. Thanks a lot for the kind words! All the best, always, Scott

    Dear Scott Susman

Hi Scott Sussman how are you where are you now my name is Joseph and you made silly the seed what state do you live in what year were you born what book are you gonna make next what was the first book you made do you live in Italy I remember you came to Crosby and told us about your life and what you dreamed of doing when you grow up and I heard you are making a new book called Lurky the hand turkey and it seems interesting also mark and the molecule maker 3 under the mountain hopefully you sell a lot of books and get lots of money and then maybe you could be a millionaire and by a mansion so anyway as I was saying you are a great author and I hope you can make more books and get lots of money hope you have a good time in Italy.

  4. Hi Joseph,

I’m originally from California but, as you know, I live in Italy and have been here for the past 13 years.

My next book will be Mark and the Molecule Maker 3: The Underground Mountain, which will be available this autumn 2016, and then, in 2017, Lerky the Handturkey.

Thank you for the compliments. I’m happy and flattered to know you enjoy my books. Of course, I write for the joy of writing, and for the sake of writing itself. Earning money from my books is nice, but being a millionaire and buying a mansion is certainly not the goal. Keep in mind as you grow up and eventually decide what you want to do with your life, that money is important, yes, but it’s not the most important thing. What really matters is having time to do what you love to do, and doing it, whether it’s writing or anything else.

Again, thank you for your message and your kind words.

    Wishing you all the best,

  5. Wayne Joherl says:

Hey Scott. It’s your old Spanish teacher from fvhs. I will always remember the Halloween that you organized the fake massacre in my front yard. Io ho letto che tu abiti in Italia. Io non lo sapevo. Scrivimi quando ciai un momento libero.

  6. Hi Mr. Joherl (or should I say Hola or Ciao)!

Wonderful to hear from you. How are you? How’s everything? Of course, I remember that Halloween.

Yes, I’m in Italy. I’ve been here since 2003. (Vedo che anche tu parli italiano.) However, my wife and I will be moving back to California this August. I write books for children and running the show from here is becoming too difficult and too demanding. So though I’ll be sad to leave, a new chapter may be opening up in my life, and since my wife is Italian, born and raised in Rome, I’ll be taking a piece with me.

    Here’s my personal email:

It will be better to reach me there as my web designer is in the process of reconfiguring both my blog and also my publisher website.

Hope to hear from you again, and thanks for reaching out!

    All the best,

  7. Jojo Wang says:

    Dear Mr. Sussman,
Recently, you have visited my school, Adobe Bluffs Elementary School. I really enjoyed your presentation, especially when you read us a bit from Shelpa McStorm, and the sombrero mentioned Weird the Beard. I hope your voice gets better! Also, when I heard that you moved to Italy because I speak Italian, though I am not Italian in any way. Amo i tuoi libri! Mantenere il buon lavoro e continuare a scrivere.
    -Jojo (Jocelyn, if you must)

  8. Jojo Wang says:

Oops! I meant ‘when I heard you moved to Italy, I was thrilled because I speak…..’

  9. I’m happy to hear you enjoyed my presentation. My voice is MUCH better, thanks!
