As you know, Thanksgiving was last Thursday. Of course, it’s not an Italian holiday but my ex-roommate’s girlfriend is American and we celebrated at her place. Optimum health, fit as a fiddle 0

Dear Bradshaw,

I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned this yet but I had my cholesterol checked when I was in California last August and it was up to 317. Inconceivable, isn’t it? A year earlier it was 252 and even that was incredible. As you may know, I’m 5 foot 9 inches tall and weigh 132 pounds. Also, I wake up at 6am, Monday through Saturday, and exercise for an hour. I’ve been a vegetarian for 22 years. I don’t eat cookies, cake, potato chips, doughnuts, marshmallows or any kind of candy. I don’t drink coke, hard liquor or milk, nothing but juice, water, and wine. My doctor says I’m in optimum health, fit as a fiddle, and admits the state of my cholesterol is mind-boggling (and hereditary). continue reading »

Italy and the world’s future 0

Yo Shaw,

As you know my job involves teaching students face-to-face, which means I’m paid to sit and talk to people for an hour at a time. My students are doctors, lawyers, politicians, police officers, bodyguards, housewives, architects, accountants, athletes, actors, directors, musicians, bankers, journalists, gardeners, dog sitters, and almost every other occupation you can imagine. Dear Bradshaw,

Having to get up at the usual time (6am), I found it furiously annoying to be woken up at 4am to the sound of who-knew-how-many people making way-too-much noise. What they were doing at that hour and why they were hanging out on our humdrum street instead of a bridge, in a piazza, at a monument, a fountain, or any of five thousand more fascinating places in Rome is a mystery. continue reading »
